Sure you set your plan and put your coordinates in - you know, the organisational and personal KPI's. You straighten up and try to fly right but still can't quite reach the destination with ease! Are you trying to fly the business by yourself or are you sharing the cockpit with people who make up for the skills you don't have?

Is your business set up to quickly adapt to changing circumstances? Can you and your team cope with change in a positive way. Are your communication skills up to scratch? What are people hearing you broadcast over the PA - "This is the end. Assume the crash position!"
OR
Are the people on your team joining you and reassuringly saying to passengers (customers, suppliers) "Ladies and gentlemen, this is your Captain Drew Confidence from the Flight Deck, accompanied by First Officer Do-Wright & Cabin Manager Your-Safe. We may be encountering a little turbulence, but do expect to make our destination with only a small delay. We want to thank you again for choosing to fly with us". Which would you rather listen to?

Do you want every aspect of your business to be first class? This includes your people, your processes and your daily practices. So if we're flying together in business it's important we understand what's going on around us - where we're safe and where we may be at risk. The environment can have serious impact on your Business: your people, your timeframes, your production, your consumers and your profits.

What are you going to do now about the stuff you can't control? Let's be strategic and identify your options:

* Have you been through anything in the past that can offer you insight into the best way to respond?
* Are there people around you that you can learn from?
* How are you going to let your customers know you really care that this might affect them?
* What can you do to protect your Brand?
* How do you keep running a business and weather the financial storm?
* What are the issues at a local level that may impact you and your business?

Mind mapping is a terrific tool to help you unpack the different scenarios that may occur. Meeting with people who have more experience than yourself offers an untapped source of information. Dedicating a set time each week to work on future proofing your business is critical. So too is rest!

The volcanic ash won't always be around and you will have clear skies again. Plot your position now. Get the right people - the right temperament, the right skills for what's needed to land this thing. Know what external assistance is available to call on in emergency. Maintain communication with every stakeholder. Identify different ways to reach your destination. Be as ready as you can be. Then relax. Everything else is in God's hands right?

Tarran Deane
Tarran is a Speaker, Author, Executive Coach & Seminar Presenter.
Passionate about people embracing their ability and living for a cause greater than themselves, Tarran helps Leaders to get on with the job of implementing Vision, shaking the status quo and loving the work they do.

Malaak Compton-Rock - Author Details - Random House Australia

Malaak Compton-Rock - Author Details - Random House Australia

2011.01.05 Build a Village; Build a Vision

I saw the interview today with Malaak Rock, wife of Chris Rock on Oprah and wanted to share the resource link with you all for Malaak's 1st book "If it takes a village to raise a child - build one!". You may wish to grab a copy. Remember to try http://www.bookdepository.co.uk when purchasing if you'd like to avoid freight charges.

Many of you know that I've been involved in community engagement around disability issues since the early 1990's. Over the past 2 years my passion for inclusion and for people to find their voice has broadened as a consequence of volunteering at Woorabinda Aboriginal Missions and more recently joining a largely Australian Indigenous & Torres Strait Islander Church.

Did you know there are more than 256 tribal nations and dialects right here within Australia? Are you aware of the history surrounding early settlement of Australia and the disempowerment of generations of Aboriginals?

We've got some work to do in order to build a strong community - a truly global village. But the best way to start is to begin.

Bringing people together. That's connection and reconciliation. Reconciliation is a powerful tool that is close to the heart of God. It begins with Him and is outworked in our life when we grasp the humbling gift of grace.

Malaak Compton-Rock shared a line today that grabbed my attention: "Service is the rent we pay on doing life". This is more than a tithe or a financial offering. This is birthed out of a heart of gratitude.

Consider how you might help build a village today. Here's what you can do:

1. Consider your personal values – what are your ‘not negotiables’ in life? E.g dead set against adultery so LOYALTY may be one; to live unafraid, so COURAGE may be one
2. Develop a personal vision statement – what’s your purpose? Your ‘ah haa this is why I was put on the earth!’ Put it in a sentence or short paragraph. It’s your answer to the”so tell me about yourself” or the “why do you do what you do?”
3. Develop a couple or family vision statement – when life is bigger than yourself you have a choice to think REALLY big!
4. Mind-map a few ideas of what you want to see in your life over the next 3 years (strategic plan) e.g. increased understanding of family members, quicker responses to emerging needs within your community, percentage of your income in donations
5. Break it down to monthly or weekly goal posts that help you with your decision making (operating plan) Who are you going to serve? Where will you volunteer?
6. Celebrate your milestones of achievement (reward & recognition)
7. Be grateful on a daily basis and love on the ones you do life with! Family, colleagues, friends

We can all do our bit to build a global village. Just begin.

Life is a privilege to be honoured.

Tarran

Eight Ways to Grow in 2011

by Tarran Deane

The United Nations has declared 2011 the International Year of the Forest! Yes, the U.N. wants us to understand the importance of protecting the growth of our forests. Forests are forests as a consequence of a healthy bio-diverse group of plants and wildlife growing together through the cycle of life. This should be protected. Where destruction occurs, the seeds of new life should be planted.

Can we personally grow? Can we collectively grow? Can we be thoughtful, considerate individuals bonded by our commitment to enrich one another’s lives through encouraging, respectful, supporting and truthful relationships? I believe we can.

We can choose to grow personally & professionally. Imagine the impact on our families, communities, churches and companies.

1. Survey the landscape – what’s your life looked like this past year? Anything you would ahve liked to turn out differently? What are you going to need in your tool box for the year ahead? Do you need other ‘landscape artists or professionals’ to come alongside you? What feedback have you had about your life this past year? Have you filtered the comments and now realise maybe there’s some tweaking you can be doing?

2. Weed the ground – You can’t stand on the outside of your life and expect things to happen for you. Your life requires your involvement. Take responsibility and begin. Begin by weeding out of your life unhealthy thinking, attitudes and behaviours that only caused you to stay contained and poison relationships. Make some tough decisions. Pull out those pesky roots of disappointment, regrets, bitterness, and offense.

3. Prepare the soil – time to replace where the weeds have been with some good things. Our home is on a rocky hillside and we had to buy in some organic soil, wheelbarrow in some valley river rocks, crate in the mulch and than labour to transform the look and feel of our place. It didn’t just happen once either. It happens seasonally. You and I may have to ‘buy-in’ some talent and expertise ourselves to prepare our mind for thinking better. We’ve got to dig in some good personal values, regularly maintain our thinking. Every bit of ‘crap’ from the past can be used to build a terrific and fulfilling future, even if it looks different to what we imagined.

4. Select the seed – so now you’re feeling enthusiastic and positive about 2011! If you have identified key areas that you want to focus on e.g. time management, relationship building, better budgeting, career development, work-life balance then be S.M.A.R.T in your goal setting and prioritise your efforts for growth. Get in there and drive the growth for as much as depends on you.

5. Support the growth – Recognise what resources you need in order to achieve in your goals. Do you need to invest in your professional development? What's going to keep you motivated to achieve? Is it rest, journaling, music, connecting with like-minded people at church, work or play? Professional landscaping services generate millions of dollars for the economy. People often out-source lacking the time, know-how or discipline to tackle some maintenance in their own strength . You may consider engaging a mentor or coach to work with you and keep you accountable Roses flourish with pruning. Tomatoes requiring staking and structures for growth.

6. Watch for predators – Some birds are like people: they come in make a lot of noise and distract you from your purpose; other’s will come in and damage your emerging efforts; some will go behind your back and eat away at your confidence, just like the birds who steal the paw paw off my husbands much watched tree!. It doesn’t matter what you do or who you are, everyone will have an opinion about you and your lifestyle at some point. You know, that’s okay. Just be aware of who you’re dealing with and what your personal trigger points might be. Put strategies in place to counter their efforts. If you're growing something worthwhile you will be faced with some unpleasant conditions and criticism from time to time. Be mindful of the criticism, look for truth in it and use it to enhance your life. Otherwis,e set it aside and keep watch over your values, invest in your marriage and family, regularly monitor your effectiveness at work and look for ways to continuously improve.

7. Harvest the growth - get ready to harvest! Successful gardeners watch over their crop and know when the time is right to harvest and prudently store seeds for future planting. Fail to weed, you’ll harvest more weeds. If you’ve planted wisely and focused on key goals, you’ll reap a harvest. The key is to not grow weary in doing good! Stick with it and then rejoice when you see the fruit of your labour! In rural and wine growing areas around the world once the harvest is compelted, family and friends come together and celebrate the crop. Make sure you stop and celebrate your achievements periodically throughout 2011!

SUMMARY
8. Strike a cutting – true growth is never self-centred. Real growth provides a resource or fruit for others. Live outwardly. Share the benefit of your experience. Connect with your neighbours. Believe the best in others. Don’t be so quick to judge what you don’t understand. Be prepared to change the way you’ve always done life. Learn from other cultures. Celebrate life. Nourish your spirit. Maximise your talent. Accept responsibility.

In 2011 plant a lot of trees and help others grow too!

Tarran Deane. Dip Business Management,Dip Bus Administration, WPT&A, Adv Dip Christian Studies

Tarran is a vibrant speaker, author, coach, and founder of Embracing Ability. As in life, the right change or ‘currency’ may enable you to gain entry to ‘the greatest show on earth’ - your chosen career, your dream relationship, achievement of your financial, spiritual,or physical goals. In fact you might have to go away and come back again. You may have to go and source a bank where you can ‘draw on your deposits’. You might have to go and work at something you don’t like to get a little more of what you do like, currency. Currency could be described as finance, skill, experience, a commodity, or an asset that you can redeem*. This applies no matter who you are:

Are you a new citizen or resident? A business founder? Fresh out of college and trying to find your way?

Are you the breadwinner in the family? Trying to cover the increasing cost of living, with rising mortgage rates? Insurance premiums jumping? Fuel prices on the rise?

Or are you the single person, trying to make it big, get some cash in the bank, go on that holiday overseas, save for your first home, bring your cell phone bill back into control?

Are you the non-residential parent trying to make ends meet in your new living arrangements, paying child support payments to the other parent and not receiving a return on investment of time spent together between you and the child?

Are you on the board of a community organisation and the gap between government funding and the true provision of services continues to grow at an exponential rate? Is your not for profit organisation finding that debtors are increasingly slow to pay their accounts? What happens in the GFC and redundancies, government grant guidelines changing, and donations fluctuating like never before?

The tourist stranded abroad because of a natural disaster or phenomenon and little change left from your holiday – is that you?

The 'money changer' may feel like funds are coming in one hand and out the other?

You could be one, or a mix of these people and the challenges remain the same: How do you maximise your income and the return on investment?

Answer: You’ve got to know YOUR business and plan to succeed. Simple but INTENTIONAL!

Questions for: Company, Community, Clan & Church

1. How reactive are you to emerging issues and opportunities?
2. Personally or professionally – do you have a plan? Could be strategic, operational, communication, marketing or financial?
3. Have you undertaken a risk assessment on the numerous variables that could lead you to feel ‘out of control’ and jeopardise your cash flow? What are your strategies to assist you and your team to implement counter measures wherever possible
4. Are you a SME – Small Business Enterprise or NGO – Non Government Organisations or Church Group? Are you aware of current legislation and due diligence? How do you communicate the vision and invite 'buy-in'?

The Way Forward:
'Fail to plan then plan to fail’ so the saying goes. Imagine if God didn’t have a plan and everything was reactionary? Jeremiah 29:11 reads “For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord, “plans to bless you not to harm you. Plans to give you a hope and a future”. If the big guy is into planning than shouldn’t we be too? So what could you consider:

 Strategic Plan - “The document that is the result of long-range (strategic) planning. It usually covers a minimum period of five years, sets forth the mission and goals of the program, prioritizes strategies, and formulates the financial basis for achieving the goals” [http://erc.msh.org/mainpage.cfm?file=2.2.3s.htm&module=gmt&language=English]

 Operational Plan - ”sets forth the specific projects or activities (consistent with the strategic plan) that will be conducted, and the timetable and resources needed for completing those projects or activities”

 Financial Year Budget – “A plan for a person or company's expenditures. Making a budget involves looking at one's revenue or income and matching that to expenses such that the person or company pays for all necessary expenses. A budget is in balance if revenues equal expenditures, in deficit if the person or company must resort to borrowing to meet expenses, and in surplus if money is left over to be used for savings or expansion” [http://financial-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/budget]

 Financial Year Forecast - (Actual Year to Date and remaining spend window)

 Career Plan – Professional development. If you’re working for a company the HR department and your immediate supervisor will work with you on an annual minimum basis to identify opportunities for growth and relevant training for you to undertake

 Family Contracts – Gary Smalley & son Greg Smalley Psy.D have written a great book “the DNA of Parent – Teen Relationships” and have “ drawn upon their experiences from Greg’s teen years – along with those of 5,000 teens they surveyed – to give you a workable plan for relating positively to your son or daughter ISBN 1-58997-163-9

Our Next Circus Role will be : THE TICKET SELLER

* As a Christian I believe that Jesus Christ gave His Life for me as the greatest act of love for humanity. Now, that my friends is major currency that isn't affected by fluctuating currency markets! Have you thought about investing?

My Life Is A Circus! - The Many Roles We Play

Life is a Circus!

How many times have you thought 'my life / workplace/ home feels like it is a circus act?'

One minute you’re laughing, the next holding your breath. At other times you’re rushing to your seat so you don’t miss out.

Another moment, your eyes are wide open as air escapes from between your lips with wonder! Could be you witnessed an ordinary person do something extraordinary or a child walk for the first time, and you were moved.

What about you? Have you ever felt that you are all at once, animal feeder, money changer, ticket seller, transport coordinator, freak show, character in the crazy mirror, crowd controller, promoter, grounds maintenance guy, acrobat, elephant tamer, beverage lady, juggler, and ... trapeze artist?

Maybe it's just me? Plenty of people I connect with comment on how frantic life seems to have become and how intentional we have to be now not to become overwhelmed by the busyness of life. Still it remains, just like in the circus we're completing obstacle, defying acts daily as the 'show must go on'.

Consider Jessica Watson, Australian solo yatchsman who had a dream to become the youngest girl to circum-navigate the world? She has been amazing to watch. Courage, tenacity, practice, practice, preparation and ...boring food towards the end.

The world is full of people taking risks, thrilling us, mystifying us with how they seemingly do 'it' all – whatever ‘it’ is!

Who are these people? Is it you? What’s the attraction? What’s the downside? Does a circus get repeat business? Are you in business? What does your 'act' say about you? What TYPE of circus are you? Old school? cirque de soleil?

Are you the ‘ringmaster’ of your life or are you blown about by circumstance? Would people look at you and your act and describe you as a circus?

Who Do YOU Identify With in the Old Circus Model?
We begin examining the first in a series of traditional circus roles. Do you identify with the:

Animal feeder:
Maintaining the wellbeing of animals in your care; all aspects of hygiene; cleanliness. Hey it actually sounds like being a parent:chief cook and bottle washer! Is that you? Do you feel it’s just work home, work home?

From the armed services to the service line at your local takeaway, favourite restaurant to the familiar smell of your mum’s kitchen and dad’s weekend BBQ. Let’s face it we need to eat but when I speak to most parents, particularly mums, we have all agreed that at some time if anyone were to ask us again what was for dinner a neurotic meltdown could occur!
It can be true that we take life into our own hands when we forage for food at our local supermarket.

Harsher examples however, have been seen in Haiti after the earthquake; the power being off for days and weeks after New Orleans, cyclonic storms and flooding on massive scale throughout the greater part of Australia’s Queensland regional communities and coastal cities, volcanic ash from Iceland and travelers isolated across the world as international airlines lose millions of dollars everyday! Ordinary human beings faced with the simple truth of finding food and feeding the beast.

In the west we face a burden of gluttony. We feast on things like caged animals with shopping malls hosting line upon line of fast food alternatives. What are you feeding yourself and others? Is it gluttony? Pause, reflect, give thanks for the accessability you have to food, but choose wisely and care for those in your charge responsibly.

Question: When’s the last time you saw a doctor for a complete physical? Maybe it’s time you did.
Action: Schedule a medical. Check on your full bloods including pH levels. Too acidic? Too alkaline? Overweight yet undernourished? Under the guidance of your medical practitioner perhaps it’s time to give your body some breathing space. Consider changing the type and quantity of your food to something more healthy. Consider fasting for a period of time. Record how you feel after giving up for a period of time - coffee, tea, soft drinks, donuts, red meat. Journal the effects and change your lifestyle.

Maybe you'll cease to see yourself as the animal feeder and find some pleasure in enjoying the company of others over a meal. Make a commitment to treat someone this week.

Maybe you’ll experience a circus ‘Ta-dah” feeling!

Next Blog My Life is A Circus continues: Are you the Money Changer?

Shakespeare said, "How do I compare thee to a Summer's Day? Thou art more lovely and more temperate, though rough winds do shake the darling buds of May and Summer's lease hath all too short a date".

Summer in the Southern Hemisphere ended here yesterday with the passing of more tropical showers and a Tsunami warning generated by the Chile earthquake. The rain continues today and though the Tsunami did not eventuate, our lives sometimes have seasonal storms and the occasional threat of a near disaster that exist in our mind and fail to materialise despite us spending hours considering what might or might not occur. The future is a pretty tough gig to predict.

The onset of Autumn in our part of the world heralds a period of deep change. Leaves fall, summer fruits cease, bulbs are planted for a new Spring harvest. The tropical rains will begin to ease. Westerly winds will gather strength and prepare for the winter chills that come upon our coastal towns. While it may appear in this upcoming season that our personal progress slows quite the opposite will be true. God does His best work in this season of our lives. Energy can be redirected to the root systems, ensuring our faith foundation is strong and steadfast preparing as it were for the new growth that will spring forward in the following months.

Remember, if you find yourself in a dry season; a season where questions go unanswered or where grief lies at your door - hold fast in your faith. Just as your faith roots are being adjusted your story will inspire and encourage other women and men to keep on going.

Don't EVER think that Autumn and Winter mark the end of Hope! Hope continues and we have to decide daily what we shall focus on. So let's focus on HIM, the giver of life in every season of our lives:

H - Happiness, hospitality to others, holding fast to God's promises, honourable, hiding (taking comfort in)your very real faith
O - Opportunity, Offering (generosity to others), obedient - sometimes you've just got to do the right thing and not whinge about it (yeah, I know this can be hard when you're simply weary and grieving - but don't give in)
P - Possibility, purpose driven, peace-filled, positioned strategically for growth
E - Examine our lives, be energised, expectant, example to others, enduring - don't dare quit, extol one another - encourage people coming alongside them & holding them up when they're weary or taking 'faith risks'.

I'm challenged by this and the stories of others that inspire me. Don't quit. When we understand how valued we are by God as individuals and how collectively we are loved as His Church, I am compelled to navigate the different seasons of life.

Outside the rain continues to fall. Life isn't perfect. Autumn comes. Roots go down further and through faith, new growth will occur. Our God is Mighty and is committed to you. God remembers you and I in and out of every season. Hold fast and press onwards. Do not quit or give up on the people in your lives. Pray for one another regularly.

Loving you from Australia's Pacific Coastline

Kisses

Tarran

Life Group Survey Outcome

HOPE CHURCH LIFE GROUPS: New Fortnightly Breakfast Meeting Commenced

Thank you to all who provided feedback through various communication channels including the facebook event page. The agapanthus blooms are tiring. The river stones cry out in the heat beside weathered boardwalks and the rippling water of the inground pool.

Yesterday kite surfers could be seen from this hillside retreat where spirits are soothed and merry hearts do good like a medicine. These past few days my hubby and I have been in the company of long time friends as we've holidayed in Northern NSW. There has been time for reading, watching of movies (just loved "Second Hand Lions" starring Robert Duvall and Michael Caine), swimming, sharing our hearts and considering the way forward.

Here we are at 54 and 43 years respectively. We have a few runs on the board and so do our friends. We cherish them for their very character, how they love, how they honour and banter with their spouses, how they dig their children, celebrate one anothers achievements and mourn together when life's seasons change. How as teachers, emergency service personnel, IT specialists, child care operators, business owners, individually and collectively, they invest in community and future generations; a lot of the time without even realising it! This seems to work, from what I can see from the outside looking in, by getting the balance right. They combine a vibrant love of life with a recognition that you've got to sew to make a difference, that if you want something to occur then make a plan, strategise, invest in your own learning, and share your knowledge with others, work hard, be a good mate, be hospitable. Be open to making new friends, don't hide behind walls, exercise in your local neighbourhood, laugh heaps! As my husband said recently, 'friends help you stay sane'.

Dave and I will come away from this time refreshed, having laughed, swum, eaten too much and ingested far too much coffee. Life's fun when we have an attitude of gratitude. Gratitude is an essential key ingredient in every relationship and helps smooth out the lumps. Developing an attitude of gratitude takes practice, like renewing the mind or making a great cup of coffee!

Why don't you join me and consider all the things we have to be grateful for today and develop a faith - filled heart of positive expectation. I know I am grateful for that rippling pool of water that's beckoning me right now. I think I might just go and dive right into life!

Thanks friends for doing life with us....

Christians Embracing Ability

I am so excited about 2010 and the potential we individually and corporately have to stretch and explore and hone our talents. We can have an absolute blast this year. It is all a question of how we see ourselves and how we see our God.

Pride is a funny thing. No really it is. Pride is what has us focusing on our own short comings. Pride is what has us operate in fear and tangle up the important relationships in our lives. Oh if only we could focus on a God who loves us 'unrelentingly' (is that a word? I don't know but 2 members of my family who have established themselves as Grammar Royalty will certainly advise me).

Do you remember that childhood game of PICK UP STICKS where you had to be super careful not to upset the other sticks as you tried to untangle your own colour? Remember how if you caused collateral damage the turn moved to someone else? Our Christian life is a little like PICK UP STICKS. There's a lot at stake!

As a Christian my opportunity is to love my God through a grateful heart bursting with appreciation for the gift of salvation that is mine through Christ. My other opportunity is to love people hopefully without causing too much collateral damage along the way! None of us are perfect and sometimes we inadvertently bump other people's sticks and we get all tangled up once again. Our God tells us, my God tells me, that He will never leave me nor foresake me. So, that means, He's with me while I work through my mess of pride and sticks in my own eyes.

I hope you all have a fantastic 2010. Seize the day. Love your God. He is Lord OVER any and every problem.

And finally, play nicely!

25th School Reunion - Calrossy Class of 1984: A Journey Home

I was standing in the deli of the country supermarket. No longer so remote and increasingly 'cosmopolitan' now the town could boast a range of coffee shops and franchises - Gloria Jeans, Jamaica Blue, Boost Juice and the list goes on. This was an emerging aspect of this thriving rural hub.

You experience something poignant when you return to the place where the fabric of your life commenced its' weave. Threads of relationships that haven't broken and somehow withstood time apart, the test of wear & tear, and maybe even some neglect.

On arriving here on Thursday I met my Mum at her sister and brother-in-laws home where the regular weekly get together was taking place. I spied my mum eagerly looking up and down the street for my arrival, and then, we were soon in each other's arms. Our shared solitude was short lived as we walked around the back of the house. I was soon ensconced in the banter between siblings that have journeyed through life together for more than 60 years. There was indeed a feeling of coming home.....

Aunts and Uncles have a unique, steadfast role in the life of their sibling's children. There is a constancy, a surety for us as we grow through life, wandering the planet, embracing technology and quietly knowing that our extended family are right where they've always been loving and supporting us from afar, back in that country town.

This trip was for my school reunion, yet on being in my aunts kitchen this reunion of family gave me a new appreciation for this generation of older Australians. They had so many tales to tell of rivers running and the life they contained, to scone mixes and beetroot plants, the richness of a healthy soil and the merriment that comes from being able to laugh at yourself and your family!

Back in 1984 I was a teenager about to embark on her grown up life. I could never imagine how much these people, my family would come to mean to me. Perhaps it is true that it is only when we ourselves begin to raise our own family that we can appreciate the joy, strength, patience and perseverance of the ones who raised us and continue to do so.

Now I best get ready for that school reunion!

Soulstep

Trafficking Leaders © – Pushing On or Pushing Around?

Ever heard question time in Parliament? Attended any interviews lately?

We often look at politicians and find ourselves disgusted with their conduct , to be fair not all of them,in what should be a professional setting. Many are shouting down others, letting fly with innuendo and mocking comments. Any other work place and they’d be challenged by the courts! They’re role models for us? Aren’t they our great leaders? Where is their dignity and regard for one another? Perhaps, hidden from view.

I read the Queensland Courier Mail on the weekend of August 8-9, 2009. The article appearing in Career One and written by Work blog, Kate Southam, Online Editor recounted an unusal employment interview attended by 'Caitlyn'. I agree with Ms Southam's heading "Creepy interviews aren't acceptable".

Generations are influenced by Politicians, and people they perceive in authority. Will Gen X or Y or the rest of the alphabet vote at all and how will they vote when they do? Someone, may be so put off by the leaders conduct that they elect not to participate in community. Yet, we know that unless individuals DO vote, then in reality we ALL get the government we deserve. That's apathy.

Like Caitlyn I also had an interesting experience recently which at the very least could be described as ‘politically incorrect’. I attended a student intake interview for a particular program. Participation, if deemed a suitable candidate, in the program is multiple thousands of dollars unless a scholarship, partial or full, is awarded.

From the entry to the room through to the conclusion of the interview every aspect resonated as being at odds with best practice and general good manners. It was contrary to professional leadership engagement as I knew it. I was prepared for tough questions that were direct, yes behavioural in kind, but not bullying in their tone.

Under the guise of determining my preparedness to participate in the tough program one of the two interviewers advised that he was going to ask some challenging questions and press me if he saw a potential ‘button’. So, I was forewarned, and believed that professional courtesy was a given. Not so. The questioning was personalized.

The questioning continued aggressively asking me ‘what are you selling?’, ‘what are you trying to sell?’ in reference to my posture (attentive, slight lean forward in my chair). Wording was ambiguous. I was asked what I would need to 'get rid of to be part of the program?' Confident that I could both gain a lot from the program and add value in return, I responded as best as I could even though my eyes leaked!

The interviewer wasn’t scary but it was a very uncomfortable process used by this person who on this occasion was in a position of perceived authority. It was a most extraordinary experience.

One week on and I still don’t think fondly of the experience, but it has benefited me. How:

• Reflection – am I ready for this, when I don’t know what the specific agenda is? How will I feel if I am offered a place or not offered a place?

• Resilience – that my character be shaped by the experience, the elements that I wish to reflect on, change, adapt or incorporate into my life

• Confidence – for people who don’t experience Christianity as a lifestyle this may be hard to appreciate. But there’s a confidence that comes from GOD. It doesn’t rest in man’s perception of who we are, what we do, what qualifications we may have or not have. It rests in HIM and how HE sees us. Check out Psalm 139 Old Testament NIV or NLT or Message Bible

• Leadership style - trust my own style whilst continually reviewing and developing!

• Commitment – my firm decision to keep making a difference where I have influence now! Maybe, just like Esther in the Old Testament, perhaps we have all "come to the Kingdom for such a time as this?"- to make a difference. We do have a choice and both an opportunity AND vitally a responsibility to embrace our gifts and talents and be a blessing not a curse to our community. There's no growth in isolation. Even if we do make each other uncomfortable.

Alan Keith of Genentech said "Leadership is ultimately about creating a way for people to contribute to making something extraordinary happen”. (Wikipedia - Definition of Leadership. I believe each leadership encounter we have should simultaneously encourage, inspire and bring dignity to all the parties even as we roll up our sleeves, ahve tough covnersatiosn and get on with the job.

We won't always be politically correct - even Christ rocked the boat and challenged the status quo. I believe that we can still do that without pushing people around. There's another way to role-model leadership and it's akin to 'loving people to life!', valuing one another and while focusing on getting the job done, we remember to have fun along the way and build relationships with people.

Let’s push on and influence positive change in our community. That's Leadership on the move - "Trafficking Leaders" for social change.

Trafficking Leaders © People on the Move or People In the Road?

Have you ever worked with a bunch of people drawn from a diverse range of experiences but who came together with a common focus? I had the priviledge of partnering with a group of individuals drawn from all walks of life, the building game, a chef and a beauty queen for example.

I held a position for 6 years as a founding manager of a non government, not for profit, Christian based ministry delivering supports to the community within the disability sector. Sounds like a mouthful doesn’t it? What a blast!

We had a clear Vision and Mission to make a difference. We lived and breathed our core values based on the Christian faith. Not as a ‘religious unction’ but as a living breathing vibrant example of faith in action on the planet. We had a blast and the ministry continues growing today.

Over 6 years we had an average of 90% staff retention. Morale was high, conflict wasn’t feared. We dealt with issues and behaviours not character assassinations. We were up front, laughed a lot, reviewing our progress regularly. Our client base grew and satisfaction was high. Our team were people moving forward, not on. They were an example of Trafficking Leaders - People on the Move!

It’s worth asking ourselves if we’re embracing our ability and that of others?

When’s the last time you and I took a look in the revision mirror, checked where we’ve been in life and determined to be a person on the move, stepping forward confidently for the benefit of all, and bringing other people on the journey with us? Maybe we should do it now? Tales of male bonding and friendships strengthened would emerge from a journey covering 4000km in 12 days.

The bike of choice amongst 7 riders - Dave Deane, Bruce Lumb, Andy Herman, Geoff McBride, Jim McBride, Laurie and the man known as Rod "Rocket" were being backed up by Big Kev in his Swiss Army Knife 4 Wheel Drive. The 4 wheel drive prooved invaluable in the 2006 bash that the boys did out to Alice Springs (but that is a whole other story).

On Friday 24.07.09 I rode my Ducati 600 Monster down to Ballina and across to Alstonville with Dave and our friend Laurie. This was to be my turn around point where I'd farewell the lads and head for home. On my solo journey back, I found my mind reflecting on my road bike competency test and a lesson for life learnt that day. The Instructor had shared with our class the following points:

- we need to look confidently ahead
- chin up
- eyes firmly fixed
- do NOT look down
- do NOT drop your chin
- know your centre of gravity
- know your emergency braking

Following are the opportunities and some would say, hazards, of people on the move, of 'Trafficking Leaders' to remember the above lessons and the impact on everyday living, playing and working: driving, riding, or walking on the Motorway of life:

- where your chin leads, your eyes will follow > look down , fall down
- you will be putting others at risk by not looking clearly ahead and anticipating what's coming around the next bend > look ahead, shape the future
- clear vision, clear goals = clear purpose, greater influence on outcomes
- know your centre of gravity > what your values are, what your faith is based on, what shakes you
- recognise, anticipate as best you can when something is about to rock your world and know how to STOP and take stock, reposition yourself for the next part of the ride of life.

So every time I ride, I remember to lift my gaze, consider the lessons of the past, be mindful of hazards and seize opportunities. Our challenge is to apply these same principles in our regular world, ever day. Will you join me?

Trafficking Leaders ~ for People on the Move

People Are Important Designs - PAID

The day started with rain and though it was night, ended with Sunshine!

Relationships are the all important factor that will continue on long after we have gone from this place. How we are NOW with one another will leave an impact, a footprint as it were on the generations that we do life with.
It can be difficult juggling all the demands on our time, the people we need to see, want to see, those who want to see us and spend time with us... Each encounter an opportunity to let one another know, despite the reality of timelines, that hey right now - you're it and there is no where else I'd rather be.

Today my husband and I spent some time with 2 of our nieces, Georgia and Lu Lu, while their Mum took the youngest girl to the Doctors for her shots. So, here we were in Aunty Tari and Uncle Davo's kitchen pretending like Aunty Tari was a contestant in Masterchef. It was a brave move as yesterday my Guacomole Dip had Georgia declare "Sorry Aunty Tari but you're the Loser". Harsh from a 7 year old. Today however, we made a warm pumpkin and pine nut salad for lunch. The girls sat on the bench and our conversation turned to step families, my daughter (their favourite they said!) and the following conversation unfolded."Tari you and Davo will die one day but you want to see us married and have our own kids too. But don't worry if you're dead we'll write you a letter and let you know the boys name. Then we'll give the letter to God and He can tell you all about the wedding so you don't miss out".

Kids see things so simply. These girls squeal with delight and love hanging with their extended family. We over complicate life sometimes don't we? Let's place value more, and more, and more on relationships.

Rather than get caught up in the global financial crisis (gfc), why don't we undertake a GLOBAL FAMILY CHALLENGE - GFC? Strengthening ourselves individually and collectively by purposefully investing in our community. Talk to our neighbours, encourage our youth, lend someone a hand. Stop politicising, break down barriers and recognise the high price PAID by Love. Turn negativity on its' ear!

The day ended with Sunshine and hope for the future.

Tarran Deane ~ Embracing Ability

Tarran Deane ~ Embracing Ability

Winter ~ A Season of Reflection

It might seem that very little happens during the colder months. Leaves have fallen from the trees. There is a crispness in the air that chills the bones as the winter winds come in from the southwest across desert lands and collide with offshore gusts. In the house on the hill the heater is on low from midday. The wind swirling below floorboards and palms bending with the gusts. Yet, the diehard surfer is never put off by the chill. A faithful 'steamer' and clean crisp waves beckon for attention. The husband is delighted and almost skips out the door with anticipation. The wife relaxes and reclines, content in the knowledge that her Prince is doing something he loves. The call for a late morning coffee comes with the suggestion that surfing may be completed. She walks down to Burleigh and into the Vanilla Bean for Ginger Infusion and the promise of a date with her husband, the barefooted surfer.
Later, sitting in the fleeting sun, trying to hide from the breeze, she sits reflecting. Winter is a nice time for that. A touchstone of rememberance in Psalm 139, of value and worth and love. Winter, where a lot happens beneath the surface, hidden from the naked eye. A repositioning, harbouring a season of potential and the promise of Spring - a flourish of growth that will nourish many in the months to come
